Position Overview

The Mechanical Design / R&D Engineer plays a crucial role in leading the mechanical design, development, and implementation of automated machinery tailored for the fruit and vegetable processing industry across Europe. Working remotely in Italy, this position drives new product development from initial concept through 3D modeling, prototyping, testing, and field validation while collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering and automation teams in Italy, Spain, and China.

Key Responsibilities

  • R&D & Product Leadership: Lead mechanical development projects from initial concept through technical implementation, designing and optimizing automated machinery for the European fruit and vegetable sector.

  • 3D Design & CAD Modeling: Create precise 3D models, complex assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks (and PTC Creo Parametric/AutoCAD).

  • Automation & System Integration: Partner with the automation engineering team during joint equipment debugging to ensure flawless mechanical integration, optimizing overall machine performance, speed, and stability.

  • Prototyping & Field Testing: Direct the construction, testing, and validation of prototypes; perform industrial field testing, collect diagnostic data, and lead root-cause analysis to continuously refine machinery designs.

  • Manufacturing & Supplier Alignment: Collaborate with internal assembly teams and external manufacturing suppliers to ensure accurate production, resolving technical issues during assembly and commissioning.

  • Technical Documentation: Author detailed R&D technical documentation, test reports, manufacturing guidelines, and operational specifications.

Candidate Qualifications

Required:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.

  • Experience: 8+ years of practical mechanical engineering experience in the design and development of customized/non-standard automated machinery (e.g., box handling, logistics, filling, weighing, palletizing, stacking, and case packing).

  • Software Proficiency: High proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

  • Manufacturing Knowledge: Deep understanding of mechanical manufacturing processes, including machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, and final assembly.

  • Language Skills:

    • Italian / Spanish: Fluent (spoken and written).

    • English: Professional working proficiency to collaborate smoothly across international engineering hubs.

  • Core Competencies: Methodical and meticulous engineering mindset, strong logical analysis, independent problem-solving skills, and willingness to travel for prototype testing and equipment commissioning when required.

Preferred (Nice to Have):

  • Knowledge of PTC Creo Parametric.
